FY2022 Call for Proposals

IMI was authorized as Joint Usage/Research Center “Joint Research Center for Advanced and Fundamental Mathematics-for-Industry” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in April 2013. As part of the projects, the Institute of Mathematics for Industry (IMI) is now announcing the call for proposals for the FY2022 Joint Usage Research Programs.

1. Qualification

Researchers who belong to universities, graduate schools, research institutes, and companies.

2. How to Apply

Applicants should submit a proposal through the following online application system on this webpage.

A part of the proposal of the adopted project will be made public on our website. Please refer to the above webpage for details on the data required for the application and the items to be disclosed. If there is a researcher of our institute whose expertise is related to yours, please indicate his/her name on the proposal. The presence or absence of the name of a researcher of the IMI will not affect the acceptance or rejection of your application.

International Project Research

The principal investigator must be affiliated with an overseas institution. Around two proposals for Workshop (I) will be adopted.

Research Category

Workshop

This is a multi-day workshop open to the public at the IMI or other facilities of Kyushu University.

Participation from industry is required for the organizing committee members and speakers. A tutorial-type workshop is also acceptable.
Research themes should be developed in view of industry-academia collaboration.

Workshop (I)

  1. The maximum amount offered for travel expenses and honorarium for lectures is 700,000 Japanese yen.
  2. Conference posters will be produced and distributed by the IMI.
  3. Workshops are typically held at the facilities of Ito Campus, Kyushu University, including the IMI. (Please consult with us if you wish to use the facilities of Kyushu University other than those in Ito Campus or the facilities other than those in Kyushu University.)
  4. Principal investigators are requested to submit a report of around two-pages in A4-size after the research is completed.
  5. Proceedings will be published either online as “MI Lecture Notes”, published by the IMI, or as peer-reviewed proceedings of the book series “Mathematics for Industry”, published by Springer Nature. 

Note that it is possible to hold online workshops or hybrid workshops even if your research category is not Workshop (I) Online Type.

Workshop (I) Online Type

  1. The maximum amount offered for honorarium for lectures is 100,000 Japanese yen.
  2. Conference posters will be produced and distributed by the IMI.
  3. Principal investigators are requested to submit a report of around two-pages in A4-size after the research is completed.
  4. The proceedings will be published either online as “MI Lecture Notes”, published by the IMI, or as a peer-reviewed proceeding of the book series “Mathematics for Industry”, published by Springer Nature.

The number of proposals to be adopted is an estimate and will be flexibly applied depending on the status of applications.

The budget will vary according to the evaluation score after review.

Research programs above must take place during April 2022-March 2023.

The IMI provides financial support and administrative work necessary to implement the joint usage research such as arrangements for venues, and the production and distribution of the proceedings. We do not arrange for accommodation or transportation. Participants are given free access to the library, internet, and other research resources.

Measures to Prevent the Spread of the COVID-19 Infection

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection, we take specific measures depending on the type of participation method: online, in-person, and hybrid events.

  1. Online
    Online meetings and webinars can be held by using an IMI-owned Zoom account.
  2. Hybrid
    It is possible to host both online participants and in-person participants at the same time by using the Zoom appliances and cameras installed in the IMI Auditorium and Conference Room. Please contact us for the capacity of the rooms.
    We may ask you to hold the meeting completely online depending on the spread of the infection.

(i) Kyushu University Guidance [Level 2 Restrictions]
Events are online only.


(ii) Kyushu University Guidance [Level 1-1.5 Partial Restrictions]
Online or hybrid events are recommended. In-person events are also possible with capacity restrictions and adequate hygiene measures.


(iii) Kyushu University Guidance [Level 0 Normal Operation]
Events take place on site as usual with adequate hygiene measures. Hybrid or online events are also possible.
